Root Canal For 8-Year-Old

My 8-year-old son is suffering from jaw and tooth pain for a month. It gets worse while chewing. He finds it difficult to chew properly because of the pain. So we went to a dental care clinic in Brampton. The dentist examined and said he has a cavity in one of his molars and it is close to the nerve. So we will have to do a root canal. He said it is better than removing the tooth completely.

But root canal on an 8-year-old seems strange for me. When I asked about this the dentist told me the root canal is not a complicated procedure and promised me there will be no pain.

Still, I'm not fully convinced. Is it a really painful and complicated procedure? Heard that root canal treatment is a quite lengthy process and requires a lot of appointment. Even if the procedure is safe I'm still worried about how he will adjust to having a stainless steel-capped tooth.  If anyone here experienced a similar situation, please share your thoughts.
thanks in advance.
