HK Chinese arrested for hitting helper

I want to share two stories to raise awareness among DB employers to rethink how they treat their helpers.

1. 79 year old local woman arrested by police after video went viral of her hitting her Indonesian helper (third time to be physically assaulted) who is only three months into her contract. The woman also threatend to chop the helper to death if she could get away with the murder. An update said the woman suffers from dementia and claims she has no recollection of the incident.

2. Filipina helper tortured by employer and left to die in a freezer

29 yr old Joanna Demafelis went to work in Kuwait in 2014 to pay the debt for repairing their home battered by super typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan. Two years later, her family didn't hear from her and reported her as missing. Her Syrian employer and Lebanese wife fled Kuwait to Syria in December 2016 and the helper's body was found a year later in the freezer of the employer's rented apartment by the landlord.

Some leaks in the news and social media say the employer's wife had a nasty habit of beating the helper (mother of the husband said the wife would pull the helper's hair and bang her head against the wall). The helper's body was said to have broken ribs, broken hip bone (trauma to pelvis and kidney area), and internal bleeding.

Domestic helpers are not objects. Treat them fairly. They are someone's parent, sibling, child, grandchild, spouse, etc. If anyone talks to helpers you will be shocked to learn how many are verbally and physically abused in DB and most of the time the abuser is the wife.

that's too sad to hear about that. That may be the reason the salary of helpers raised.
