Stumbled upon this gem. Dr. Sun Yat-sen's great grandson lives in Discovery Bay. The article is only in Chinese though.

Haven’t read it yet. Need my dictionary. How unlikely and yet how likely at the same time. We should never underestimate the uniqueness of Hong Kong, much as some would like us to do so.

Ger, yup, a treat for those in Discovery Bay. This is a nice surprise in addition to learning years ago that some of the relatives of China's last emperor Puyi (the Aisin Gioro clan) live in Hong Kong.

There are some Canto stars living in DB as well, I think two of them have had quite bad raps in the news last year. And we have a granddaughter of China's Hu Yaobang (Gen. Sec. of CCP) whose house was robbed in Seabee Lane.

You can use http://translate.google.com to quickly translate words by copy and paste.

Who is Charles Wong? Excerpt:

Mr. Charles TY Wong (王祖耀 Mandarin: Wang Zuyao; Cantonese: Wong Tsu-yew) is a great grandson of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and is currently residing in Hong Kong. He is Vice President of Sun Yat-sen Foundation for Peace and Education (Sun Zhongshan Heping Jiaoyu Jijinhui) and a Trustee of the Lin Yee Chung Association, the oldest Chinese association in Hawaii (Established in 1851), which runs the Manoa Chinese Cemetery.

Mr. Charles Wong holds a master degree in International Relations, from the University of California, San Diego. He has a high level of independent thought in the theory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and has spoken on numerous occasions in universities in China, Hong Kong, and the United States.

Thanks, Garmato.  For several months, since I upgraded to Windows 10, I haven't been able to open DB Forum.  Remarkably, when I just tried again it opened without a hitch.

Using Google Translate on a phone wasn't easy so I gave up.  Google is okay if you copy in a word or a phrase at a time but I always find if you put in a lot of text it just produces garbled silliness.

Thanks for extra links.  Sun Yat Sen was a remarkable man and it's interesting to learn that his great grandson lives in DB, along with several Cantopop stars.  These probably keep a low profile in case HKRI asks them to perform at Picnic in the Park  Grin Grin

If using a cellphone, how about this one:

https://www.mdbg.net/chinese/dictionary?page=translate

I couldn't access this forum for a long time as well, it would take forever to load. I was surprised to see how quiet everything here became. Few people posting in discussions. The other forum (Dbay Forum) seems to have died completely, it's overrun with spam posts last I checked.

I'm not into Canto trends but I do remember there was a female singer who was at the taxi launch ceremony in North Plaza.

When I was with Netvigator some years ago, the technician setting up the network told me he had just been setting up installation for a local celebrity in Headland Drive. I asked who it was but he said he couldn't say the name but the person is well known in Hong Kong.

I'm not sure how popular local celebs are in DB. I'm imagining most people wouldn't know them or wouldn't get too excited which is probably a good thing.

Three interesting things I had heard about Sun Yat-sen was:

1. that his 三民主義 (Three Principles of the People) was inspired by Lincoln's Gettysburg address: "government of the people, by the people, for the people"

2. he is revered by both Beijing and Taipei as the Founding Father of modern China (but with different interpretations?)

3. The Chinese language broke from Classical to vernacular and underwent major changes such as importing a lot of Japanese coined words (it's claimed that many multi-character words coined from modern western sciences, arts, ideology, etc were coined by the Japanese such as the example of 中華人民共和國, only 中華 is Chinese; 人民 (people) and 共和國 (republic) were coined by the Japanese.

Another example was that Sun Yat-sen translated "democracy" phonetically as 德謨克拉西 (de mo ke la xi) before the more popular Japanese coinage 民主 replaced it.

That is a whole other topic though. A lot of Chinese get angry because they don't believe how much influence and impact Japan has had from language, technology, culture, etc.

Good translation website.  Thanks, Garmato.  Now for a Cantonese romanisation input software.  CPIME doesn't work on Windows 10  Cry

I imagine the Japanese coined characters stem from the days when Taiwan was annexed and known as Formosa.   Interesting stuff.

This one is good for Cantonese input, no need to install anything.

http://www.cantoneseinput.com/?lang=en

If you want to enter Cantonese directly on any webpage, try this Google Chrome extension plugin

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-input-tools/mclkkofklkfljcocdin...

Edit: video instruction in English for plugin above (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vwp5TwYGsnw)

Lastly, for Cantonese input setup on Windows 10 itself, there's this instructional video on YouTube

Brilliant!  Thanks so much, Garmato.  First link has everything I need, though I've saved Google Chrome extension as belt and braces.  You Tube instructions a bit too advanced for me!

Apologies for hijacking Sun Yatsen in order to get what I want - yet again Smiley

No problem. The last one I linked was wrong though, it uses a different input. I added a YouTube link (in English) in the above post for the Google Input Tools extension. I followed it and it works. Useful if you intend to use Cantonese to type into webpages and a decent alternative to Windows IME.

So who are these Canto stars? Does HKR know about them? If they could get Eason Chan or Twins to play at Picnic on the Beach, imagine the crowds they'd attract.
