Mobile Phone Operators

Thinking of changing my mobile phone operator for something cheaper and due to bad network coverage in DB especially around Coastline.  Currently use 1010. Can anyone recommend another supplier where I can get a better mobile signal in DB?

Recommend China Mobile.  Reception is okay.  "Lite Mover" 4G Service Plan is cheap at $128 a month with $50 discount.  I never pay more than $98 a month.

thanks.  China Mobile does seem a lot cheaper than the others.  I am concerned though on the coverage they have got in DB although 1010 isn't much good anyway.  Can only take calls in certain rooms of my apartment!

Cell coverage has been a problem in DB for years, I have tried a number of carriers over the years and personally I find CSL/1010 to be the best. I did use Smartone for years, but their coverage in DB was not good.

1010 = CSL = HKT = PCCW

Cheapest phone contract I know is less than $50 per month. I'm paying only $68 per month (CMHK) with unlimited local data.

I've heard your area tends to have bad signals even for TV. I've been to a friend's house there and had a dead cellphone signal.

Check Open Signal for cellular coverage map of your area (https://opensignal.com)

Cellphone signal in Coastline Villa:
Poor = 1010, Sun Mobile,
Average = csl., SmarTone
Excellent = CMHK, 3

Ideal choices are CMHK or 3 for Coastline Villa.

I used 1010 for years, but switched instantly when with no notice they told me my plan was no longer available and instead of $90-something, the cost would be $268 plus.

Thanks everyone.

Choose 3 in the end after also considering China Mobile. Good reception so far.

68$ for unlimited data seems like a pretty nice deal. How did you get that ?

I used to have a contract with PCCW, the cost was around HK$400, I changed to China Mobile about six years ago, my wife and son also belong to CM, the coverage is excellent and I never pay more than HK$300 for the three of us.

"$128 Lite Mover" promo. It's now $88
(https://www.hk.chinamobile.com/en/corporate_information/Service_Plans/4GLocal_Se...).

HKBN is offering $98 (no contract with 3GB data)
https://www.hkbn.net/personal/mobile/en/select-plan/SIM-plans.

There's also a newer company "Birdie" offering $48 (500 MB), $90 (5 GB), $120 (7 GB), $140 (15 GB) which is no contract.
https://www.birdie.com.hk/mobile/mobile_landing/?lang=en

I'm not a heavy CMHK phone user. Just basics such as apps, email, maps, news. I don't use it for video or games. Internet connection is basic, not great and the plan probably not suitable if you make lots of calls and SMS. It's still a lot cheaper than standard plans but the purpose is in its name "Lite Mover". I have wifi access in the places I'm at so I don't need a heavy plan.

When I took out Lite Mover some years ago it was $128  less discount.  I've a roll-over contract and still pay $98 which is fine.  Fast enough for mahjong Cheesy   There's a shop in Fu Tung Plaza in TC.

Most mobile carriers have the same problem: DB is full of cranky technophobes who believe a mobile phone mast will turn their babies into homosexuals, or at best give them cancer. Until the expat population are forced out by mainlanders, it’s a lost cause.
