10 years and goodbye

Thought I would stop by since it is a little over ten years since I joined this forum.

Still think it is a terrible shame that everyone has seemingly moved over to facebook's many many groups, meaning there is a lack of centrality to the wider DB discussion.

Have enjoyed the many chats about prams on the buses, drunk teens in McDonalds, ferry prices etc etc.

But it seems that with more that 10 days between posts on what used to be the most active section of this forum, it is now practically dead.

Thanks for the memories DB forum!!  Undecided

Have people really moved to Facebook?  I am surprised.  FB is not the same thing as a local community forum.

I still find it helpful here for practical support.  There are a few old timers around prepared to answer my [sometimes stupid] questions and for that I am grateful.  Invaluable for buying and selling too.

Business might pick up if more people knew about the DB Forum.  Do they for instance advertise in Around DB?

This forum is dead because it has not had any moderator for the past 3 years and just is on cruise control with an autopay for website license.

There are several facebook groups,

DB Mums
DB mumma
Mothers of DB
DB ladies
DB matters
DB females

Being slightly facetious, but it isn't far from the truth. That is what they are basically all called. Because it's not anonymous it doesn't really cover the topics that people would be shy to ask about.

A moderator would have been good, but I think it is more about a change in technology usage.

HK1980, you leaving or saying this forum is RIP? The other forum is literally RIP (full of spam posts). This forum is still active for buy/sell and business but not so much for discussion.

Facebook groups is pretty much similar to buy/sell, business. More popular forums are Geoexpat and maybe even AsiaXpat.

People say this forum is used by lunatics because replies tend to be abusive rather than civil. And most posts tend to be about complaints rather than general discussion.

Btw, anyone ever wonder what happened to Windies? Is he still alive? Old geezer was entertaining.

Ger, I joined a few FB groups for the news feed but not engaged in any discussion. The great thing about forums is the anonymity which provides some safety against crazy people.

Poka, I don't think it's anything to do with the moderator. This forum has largely been free from spam posts (unlike the other Dbay forum). I think it's more to do with seeing abusive replies and not wanting to be subject to nasty comments. A forum is pretty much only as good as its community. A lot of interesting people have left because they received excessive online abuse. Two members in particular are BlondieHK and manou.

Heck, even "Windies" was abusive to HK1980 by calling him  a pedophile. That guy was not right in the head but his posts were fun to read but he too got on the receiving end of abuse when he was caught asking for books to donate and using them to teach kids (i.e. profited from people's kindness)

Garmato - not sure I agree about the protection from crazy people.  The very anonymity here seems to afford them carte blanche to say what they like, however offensive.

I was given a hard time when I first joined.  Maybe this doesn't hurt you or HK1980 - your backs may be broad - but I was  shocked and depressed when what I felt were harmless posts were chewed up and spat out with foul language.

Still, the Forum has been a useful tool for buying, selling and for general advice.  I see it as a microcosm at local level of the kind of thing you read on FB or the local press - though FB regularly blue lines and deletes some of my posts and that has never happened here  Grin

Garmato and HK1980 - this video floated past my FB page.  Reproduced here for your interest.  Good Cantonese from these foreigners.

@garmato - well I think a lot of new members give up signing up to the forum because they don’t know that we are still in 2015

Poka, haha, good point. And there are a lot of dead accounts (45,955 registered members)

Ger, that video at 2:38 happens to me on a few rare occasions. I'm more surprised when I hear a Pakistani or Indonesian speak Cantonese especially when they speak without an accent.

I can suggest searching "reading hate comments" on Youtube for laughs. I wish I was good at throwing shade (making witty comeback remarks). More fun than ignoring rude comments.

Fold your pram or we'll all burn to death!  Grin

I still assert that the vast majority have migrated to Facebook.

Take today as an example, usually we would be deluged in people asking questions or making predictions on the typhoon.

I miss Trish.
She kept a record of the seasons in a diary, such as first call of the Koel, etc etc.

Ah, but you see I am still here, just dont really see much I need to change. Unfortunately the other mods and admin have gone AWOL.

I did manage to change the year from 2015 to 2018 a few months back so hopefully thats happening.

A lot of the old registrations were from spammers, but if you delete them it seems to screw the whole forum so I am told.

Anyway, to point out before you ask, I dont own the forum, I only have limited access and I dont have the power to delete accounts.

I am on the forum as often as I can which is normally every few days.

As for the comment that the forum has died because of no moderation, I dont think I agree, things move on and like the other poster said, FB has a lot to do with things.

Anyway, keep posting  Cheesy

So sad to read this discussion after all my years of "hanging round" , well...off and on .....with this forum.

Unfortunately the forum has rather faded , killed off slowly by those new but inferior Facebook substitutes.

I have enjoyed contributing to this forum , not always politely, I admit, but it has always been my view that if it's in the "Pub" section, then anything goes except for the use of profanities  and porn.

If readers wish to be reminded of some of "SayNoTo PrivateCars" (SNTPC) crude attempts at photo-montage these should be accessible at http://s1103.photobucket.com/user/chinarail1/library/MiscellaneousSNTPC?sort=3&p... on the "Photobucket" website.

To those leaving ( HK1980 ?) farewell ! But I hope you might change your mind.

I will stick around and will try to check the site more often than I have in recent months

PS

I'd love to stick around. I will probably check in from time to time, but it seems to be on a certain spiral. Sadly.

Take today for example. Facebook (DB Mums, and I'm not a Mum...or female) is having a debate about if benches at bus stops count as part of the queue or not.
Which they do!  Shocked

No doubt most people have migrated to Facebook. Just look at the interface on this creaky old message board, it's outdated, unintuitive and frustrating to use.

People expect the simplicity of Facebook - the ability to easily update their profiles, drop in photos or videos, like & share, filter & search etc and to do it from their phones.

Maybe if the site was still owned by someone, it could have been migrated to something more user-friendly and a few more people might still use it.

But how does the Facebook page compare on buying and selling?  A quick look reveals very few posts.  That kind of thing has been the mainstay of the DB Forum.

In this throwaway world, and in a hypermobile society, it is even more important to recycle furniture and the like.

The forum is good but as previous poster says technology has moved on. Facebook threads are so much richer and very quick to upload a photo and so much easier to contribute with a few clicks on your mobile.
