Portable Wi Fi router or something else?

I'll be staying in the UK for a month in a house with no TV, internet connection or Wi Fi and would like to use the following:

1) iPad - for internet and video-watching
2) unlocked portable Wi Fi with pay-as-you-go SIM card to use with iPad, such as...

https://www.worldsim.com/huawei-mifi-e5577c

Is this a good idea?  Would it be simple to operate - and I mean simple  Grin - or does anyone have a better recommendation?  Thanks for advice!

Have you checked prices from your current mobile provider? You can use your own phone to create a personal hotspot no need to purchase a separate WiFi modem

Thanks, Poka.  I'll enquire from my service provider.  I assumed a month's roaming charge would be rather expensive so never thought of using my phone.

Just wondering what others have done in a similar situation.

I’m on 3 and wifey is on smartone...both charge just under HK$200 per day so budget on about $6000 for a month.  Not cheap but does win on convenience...

From an online check, my provider China Mobile has a discounted offer of $98 a day, making one month cost $3,038.  I use a cheapo plan and may not qualify for this offer but it's worth a look.  Thanks, TDB.

Those are way to expensive.

I use 3 - they have 10 days plan for hkd400 so hkd1200 in total with unlimited data for use in UK

Another option is wifibb in Hong Kong airport. You can rent a portable WiFi for hkd68 a day for uk. For one month hkd2000. If you order 30 days in advance they will give you 20% discount bringing it down to hkd1600.  Note they do require a deposit

Good luck and happy travel

Hi Poka,

That's really helpful, thanks.  I'll look into the 3 scheme, though I suppose you have to be a customer first.  A neighbour has just told me about the eggs you can hire at the airport so there's another possibility.

I just have one last question - about using my iPhone as a Wi Fi hotspot.  Is it reliable?  I mean, would it support the iPad?  I have a 16 GB SE.  Thanks for advice - again!

Yes - most faster. I got tired of using the WiFi on the ferry for my iPad. Now I only use personal hotspot. Also much saver.

Fast and easy to use

Much not most - lol

Forgot to add. For the 3 plan better check that there is coverage in the area you will be staying else - otherwise the plan is not much worth.

Thanks.  Will do.  I never use the ferry Wi Fi.  No need as I get unlimited data from China Mobile.
