DB to Bridge for Macau/Zhuhai

I assume that the Border facility attached to the side of the airport will have a bus station, a bit like at Lok Ma Chau.

I do hope that HKRI run a bus there, as weekend jaunts will become a breeze!

HKR has a bus that runs every half hour to the airport, where you'll find plenty of buses to China.

Alternatively, there's some pretty reliable ferries you can get from Central, just a short walk from the DB pier.

All this ugly, expensive, ill-conceived, environmentally destructive white elephant of a bridge will offer the people of Lantau is pollution, concrete and traffic congestion.

I can't think of any reason for using it or visiting any of the places to where it leads.  Ghastly waste of money when some here have to live in shoe-boxes.  Not a bridge but a statement.

It is not for our convenience but to bring more spending visitors to DB. Get ready for tourist coaches!

And tell us, pray, where will all these coaches park when they arrive?

Not only for tourists.  It is a statement of 'one country'.  What is more, when we are truly joined with the Great Bay Area or whatever it's called, they can say quite honestly that our air pollution is home-grown.  That's the truth of the matter.

Dunno Ger - drop them off then pick up later? HKR will find a way as they have to sell new commercial spaces in the making.

I am not in favour at all of a more crowded DB.

Since HKers have no say over policy and very disorganized at protesting. These plans are going ahead as per Beijing's vision to integrate Hong Kong into the Pearl River Delta (PRD) which will have a combined population of at least 30 million (including HK and Macau).

Macau/Zhuhai - Hong Kong bridge

This bridge idea was actually first proposed to Taiwan. The project itself is already approved but pending cooperation from Taiwan which has so far rejected the idea fearing easy access for invasion. Likewise the "one country, two systems" idea was also proposed to Taiwan which rejected it and continues to monitor and observe its implementation in HKSAR. Whenever there are controversies regarding China-HK relations, Taiwan views it as reason why it won't work for them.

Guangzhou/Shenzhen - Hong Kong Express Rail.

MTR confirmed order of nine CRH380A bullet trains in 2012 which can operate up to speeds of 380 km/h. The line between Shenzhen/Futian to Hong Kong (last and final section) is under construction and expected to open Q3 next year 2018.

East Lantau Metropolis (2030)

Just as HKSAR rejects objections from residents regarding Terminal 3 for HKIA, likewise it is going forward to build the "ELM" which it listed as its vision for Hong Kong in the year 2030 onwards.

White dashed lines = highway
Yellow dashed lines = rail

New Territories North (NTN) is also part of 2030+ project which the government expects to supply additional land and housing to support an additional 1 million residents. They estimate a population of 8.22 million in 26 years. The development will follow a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) approach.

Update: The 12 kilometer bridge is finally connected as of Tuesday May 16, 2017.

https://www.hongkongfp.com/2017/05/19/hong-kong-link-road-hk-zhuhai-macau-bridge...

According to Labor Commissioner Carlson Chan (陳嘉信 Chan Ka-shun), the mega project has taken 5 years, 234 injuries and 10 deaths. Local media put that number at over 600 injured.

The two most recent deaths was 7 weeks ago:

2017-03-29: 41 yr old Nigerian, Onwuka Okomba Uka (also known as Emeka Igwe) & 22 yr old Nepali Gurung Anel, both suspected to have drowned as they were still connected by harness to the platform when the cables snapped and collapsed. The relatives complained that the authorities were not transparent and the rescue effort was slow. Onwuka's body was recovered the next day, while Gurung's was recovered after 4 hours.

Deaths:

10th - 2017-03-29 Onwuka Okomba Uka (41) Nigeria
9th - 2017-03-29 Gurung Anel (22) Nepal
8th - 2016-04-23 Noranin Phai (35) Thailand
7th - 2015-10-27 徐國輝 (Choi Kwok-fai) (49)
6th - 2015-04-07 胡家輝 (Wu Ka-fai) (62)
5th - 2014-12-12 陳漢富 (Chan Hon-fu) (58)
4th- 2014-10-19 謝道𤎜 (Tse Do-long) (43)
3rd - 2014-09-09 羅錦添 (Lo Kam-tim) (59)
2nd - 2014-07-23 吳清睞 (Ng Ching-lai) (40)
1st - 2012-10-25 譚振邦 (Tam Chung-pong) (58)

I think the government should dedicate a memorial plaque for those who died on the job. I haven't read but it seems the compensation paid was peanuts and it seems tragic that the families who depended on them now have extra hardship.

Having said I couldn't think of a good reason to use this bridge, I now see a good reason not to use it.
