Hadn't realized that place was leaving.  Went three times - always on a Thursday when it was two-for-one.   I guess I am partly responsible for their closing down for only going when there was a special, but when you charge as much as they did I don't feel too bad.

I bet we'll get another coffee shop or a clothing store.

Is it not confirmed? Everyone seems to be saying "Pizza Express" will be replacing Berliner.

Also, supposedly Marks & Spencers is looking to set up shop where the old 7-Eleven has closed, possibly take up the old Movieland space as well?

I would pass on a Pizza Express.  We have more than enough pizza options.  But a M&S food shop would be fantastic.  What are the changes the prices would be the same as their other locations?

Forgive my naivety, but is it fair to say there is a premium on everything - from super markets to restaurants - in DB?

Best guess it would be same price as elsewhere in HK.

I hope it comes, and I hope its a decent size like the one at Shun Tak.

Pizza Express...meh...
The Wildfire that used to be there failed, can't see why this would be different.

Never going to Happen, but a Dan Ryan's would be cool.
I'm not saying the food is top drawer...but they do have a good atmosphere, cocktail list, and food that can appease a whole family.

Put in a deli.  Bagels in the morning and sandwiches - corned beef/pastrami - the rest of the day.  But not priced like Duke's.

who is they? like you? but yes, very right, no proper Chinese, Japanese, Korean, even no Italian as in Italian... Well, we still have the ferry... there's plenty of choice in town. And: the Resident's Club Chinese is actually quite good.

Talking about Pizza Express, there's one opened not too long ago in Citygate, Tung Chung, together with a Nha Trang Vietnamese, which is very good.

I do hope we can have a M&S in DBay.

We have multitude of Lan Kwai Fong price level restaurants here, on an outlying island (???!!!)
The only semi decent value for money for a quick takeway is Island Café and that is on a good day when the decent chef is on duty.
We need more like this to bring some more competition in order to get the quality up a bit.
Failing that, you get what you get and take it or leave it.
That seems to be the attitude here.

wildfire was awesome and got good turnaround.  I think HKR saw that and pushed the rent past the viable point for them.

hey a 7-11 closed down so maybe its time for another super 7-11?

What DB needs is a decent option where we have prices that are in-line with other restaurants...not another crazy priced item where entrees start at 200.

What everyone needs to remember is that you will not get cheap as HKR price the rental and take a profit share, so they dictate a lot of the costs.

We just have to accept that restaurant prices will never be cheap in DB, since the landlord enjoys a monopoly.

I'd like to see a nice Indonesian or Singaporean place. Or Macanese maybe. But like as not we'll end up with another branch of Jaspa's.

The Berliner is replacing The Berliner? That would be a novel idea.

I used to go there when it was Moorings . They had a good happy hour deal and reasonable food. I have only been once or twice since they turned it into Berliners although it is the same company. They boast about having 30% off during happy hour, but it is hard to see off what.

Is it staying with the same group and just being rebranded again or is a new owner coming ?

By "gweilo-friendly Chinese", do you mean English takeaway, where everything is deep fried, salty and swimming in oil, or the US-style sweet slop-in-a-box?

I'd rather see a mid- or high-end Chinese restaurant, with fine dining and good dim sum, but the Berliner's too small for that. Maybe there'll be room if they kick out McDo or Pacific Coffee...

Yikes, two months after this post and someone dies from food poisoning at Dan Ryan's...

Worrying because it could happen anywhere.  Beware of  poultry that has 'bypassed the cooking procedure' as I think Dan Ryan's management described it.  Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year western-style festivities all include the potential for this.
