Taxi fromage DB to tung chun

Hi to everyone
We have a great opportunity to move in HK an have so many questions about it.
We actually live in France, in a great environnement  (house with very large garden in the countryside ).
Our son is 6 months old ans We off  course would d like to give him the Best.

So  DB  seems to be the best choice for us.
But my wife's work is close to Olympic station and we d like to have a time travel under 45mn to preserv our family life as it is.

Is a taxi from North Plazza to Tung Chung realy reliable ?  Easy to find every day at work time ? How long for the time travel beetwin 8 and 9 am? Is there a lot of traffic Jam? Is it possible to share a cab with interessed People?

Sorry if my english is a bit rusty...

Tanks for your answers

When it comes to taking a taxi to Tung Chung I am not sure but a question:
Why would your wife want to go to Tung Chung when her work is near Olympic Station?
She would be much better off taking the MTR from Sunny Bay.
Buses to Sunny Bay runs very frequently, every 10 minutes or so, in the morning and takes about 15 minutes.
The MTR from Sunny Bay to Olympic Station takes about 20 minutes
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your answer.
I Will check that.
Because every minutes count when it comes to family we would like to avoid most of waiting times especially when changing travelling mode.
We even think about using taxi from north plazza to olympic station as it seems to take about 30 min only (taxi meter app).
And we can use this time to do some work  (checking mails ans so)
But we have no idea about the traffic level there.
We used to live in Shangai where it was quite acceptable and where taxi or personnal driver were used most of the time.
But i will check every options😉
Thanks again.

You should check out the residential options around the area of Olympic station. It is a pretty good and convenient area. Quite a few learning facilities for children. Better eating places than DB and close to cheap wet markets.

Frankly, WazoO, I'd avoid using taxis at all in Hong Kong.  They have changed from being an honest and efficient service to a bunch of crooks who refuse fares they don't consider really rewarding, even though it is illegal to do so.

They put up cards reading 'not for hire' and then, if you ask the driver, he will make an offer for an exorbitantly priced fare to take you where you're going.  It may even be that a taxi picked up at North Plaza would be reluctant to go to Tung Chung.  He is waiting for a more lucrative long-distance fare.

Hong Kong still has some of the best public transport in the world.  It is often quicker to take a bus than it is to take a taxi and certainly it is cheaper.

I agree with a previous poster who wrote that bus from DB to Sunny Bay, then MTR to Olympic, should take around 35-40 minutes door to door.  A taxi all the way in heavy traffic might not be able to beat that.

Another suggestion - if DB style living appeals then you could take a look at Park Island as an alternative.  It's closer to Kowloon and might save on journey time.

I second that Park Island comment. Its basically like DB but more accessible. Ferry and bus rides are cheaper than that of DB. It doesn't really make sense to go all the way to North Plaza for the taxi, fetching you to a train station (which is often about another 5min wait at the platform) to go to your workplace. There are also plenty of new properties erected around Olympic station with really nice clubhouses. Or if you like easy train and taxi from home to workplace in one go, you may choose to live in Tung Chung. Some blocks are further away from the crowds.

With such current weather, I don't even care about the view anymore even though we live on a high floor with an unblocked view in the North. I'd so much rather live in a low rise looking out to trees and bushes as long as I don't have to stare into my neighbour's window!

The view in Park Island I believe is more of a bridge and sea.

Nicer pics. I think for the most part anyone able to live in DB is very fortunate. We have really nice scenic views as long as it is facing towards the sea.

If you ever take photos from the low-rise facing the high-rise, it's ugly as hell. Grin

Absolutely! Sea view / mountain view / trees view are great!
Many DB properties on squarefoot have been left hanging for almost half a year the last time I checked, many are either in really old high rises (so internal renovation doesn't really help much), or facing right into your neighbour's living room! Or for some Amalfi and Chianti peeps, a show of construction on its way for the next few years while watching your sea view disappear. Poor homeowners are now having a tough time selling their places. Prices are dropping for buyers who don't mind!

The next place we buy, I better get a 30 year plan from the govt or a monopoly tyrant whether anything is going to be erected within my window view. So far we are blessed. Lots of privacy. I recently saw a senior woman in her undies at her window in the Beach village.......  Undecided So thats a minus for some low rise there.

The biggest complain is actually the ferry fare!  Angry I have been on far better ferries in Norway, with kids playroom, snack bar and restaurants even for a very short ride!

Grandma's lived long enough not to care and it teaches a lesson to peeping toms that they won't always find a beauty in the window. Smiley

Thanks to everyone,
This will really help.

We will check around olympic a little more.
Park island looks great but maybe too isolated (shops, restaurants, communauty ).But we ll give it a look.

More than the view  (even if still important) we are looking for a place from we can be out easily to a kid's friendly outdoor. ...if possible even a small private garden  (but we may be dreaming )

Anyway we plan to come for a 3 days "trial " to see everything in real.

We also notice that properties on squarefoot, go home hk ans so have been left for months despite it looks good.We were wondering  why. That s never a good signe.

Is it possible to negociate rental price there as it was in Shanghai....for instance could a flat at 60k hkd go for 55k hkd ?

Thanks again for all your messages,  we really appreciate ! !!

Park Island (Ma Wan) has many restaurants and a supermarket! And now that I checked, it seems like they have more buses to different MTR stations than DB. They also have a Noah's Ark attraction for kids! I believe Sai Kung is amazing for kids but sadly its really too far.

Yes, view is not the most important. I hate having a balcony now. At the beginning its all fun and games, nice outdoor table and chairs. Give it half a year, you wouldn't even want to step outside in the extreme heat / extreme humidity / extreme cold. And its hard to line up any big furniture to the balcony entrance you see. Thats about 100 sq feet more of space I could have fully utilised in a place without balcony, why did I pay more for a space I almost never use. It would be amazing only if you want to do laundry there, but its not that sunny everyday anyways.

If you can't afford a place with a big lawn, there should be playgrounds and parks nearby for kids. They can also socialise and have play dates with other children there. Or if you insist, you could try looking for village houses in HK. Mainly in New Territories and also some in Tung Chung, South Lantau...and so on. Cars are cheap in HK. You get a house with 2 stories, a garden, and your own car. But it could be slightly further as long as you don't mind driving longer to work. Village houses in such areas would be much cheaper than a house-house in DB, but you get lots of outdoor space, indoor space, hiking nearby, and serenity!!  Wink

Yes, just need to prove you are living in South Lantau and you can apply a permit for your car. Only a limited number of permits for "outside" cars.

If it is important that you must get on a taxi at a specific time, you can always call for one. There are numerous companies that offer this (apps also). You can find one easily by google.
