Parking Facility for HKR staff @ tunnel

Saw this the other day....couple comes in a personal car, proceeds to go to the parking area behind tunnel, park their car their, and switch into a DBxxx tagged vehicle and proceed into DB.

Is this a facility for HKR staff living in DB or something you get if you purchase one of those crazy golf bungalows?

I think a car park DB side of the tunnel is well overdue. Residents keep resisting but it must be only a matter of time before DB has to  provide a proper car parking facility that is easily accessible for DB residents.

Think of the additional revenue HKR could get their hands on...

@"it must be only a matter of time before DB has to  provide a proper car parking facility that is easily accessible for DB residents."

Dream on baby. HKR is under no obligation to provide a car park. Under the original lease and planning concept DB was always intended to be "car free".

Residents had better get used to this idea because they will soon lose the Sunny Bay temporary car park when the housing construction starts on that side of Lantau.

Try using your feet and the buses, MTR or the ferry . It will keep you fitter. Grin

I would hardly say that DB is car free, the roads are busier than ever.

And how would a car park at the North end affect the concept of DB itself being car free?

As someone who thoroughly enjoys driving I would certainly approve of a car park. Also as a long term DB resident I appreciate the concept of keeping traffic to a minimum in DB.

There could be a compromise.

And now you are highlighting that the car park at Sunny Bay is on the hit list, then best get campaigning now. Thanks for the heads up  Wink

And how would a car park at the North end affect the concept of DB itself being car free? Once the cars get through the tunnel, CM lose control over where they venture..... they will sneak all over DB when nobody is watching . It is also very difficult to introduce legislation with additional controls on where cars may go. As matters stand the tunnel is the control.... it prohibits private cars. But once they are 'in' there is no current legislation preventing them from venturing anywhere  Cool. Thus said the Lord.

Car parking in DB North is probably inevitable, because it would benefit HKR. It'll add value to the big properties at that end of DB, since the target market wants somewhere to park their chauffeur-driven 8-seaters.

But it's the thin end of the wedge. Once residents in DB North are allowed to drive in, then more residents will start demanding similar rights.

DB may have been intended as car-free, but that's not what HKR wants. It's only a year ago they proposed a huge Riviera-style development in Nim Shue Wan, served by multiple roads and bridges. You reckon they've given up on that dream?

haven't really seen many taxi's venture where they aren't supposed to since the first few weeks it was introduced.  Same concept can be applied (not giving them DBAY xxx numbers), where the Private cars would be limited to the parking area close to db north bypass tunnel.

Not so easy for the security guards posted near the roundabout to spot which private cars have DB permits and those which don't. Errant taxis are easy to spot (and by the way a few still manage to sneak past the guards when they are not attentive)
Their predicament also has the additional confusion of "Goods Vehicles" (permitted for short stays to make deliveries) because many are small vans and estate wagons identical in appearance to private cars.

The tunnel is the only effective control...... and where would you find the land to build a new multi-story carpark ? This proposal would also have to get past the Town Planning Board which has just vetoed the Area 6f proposal with one of the main findings being that DB has been straying from its original concept of a resort and low density housing with a population cap of 25,000  in a car free environment . Good Luck !

If you really insist on a car , Yuen Long or Tsuen Mun might be a better bet

was egging you on to see what amazing image you'd post for this.....but words will do.

it can be done much better than guards, but i understand your point.  What i don't like is the elite being able to have cars in DB, without anyone doing anything about it.

Where there is a will there is a way. A car park at the north end is feasible if there is a demand. And for sure the roads could be properly managed to stop the cars straying. A dedicated road to a car park as you come out the tunnel and a further control booth on the main rod into DB. Job done.

There are enough DB residents who park cars in Tung Chung and Sunny Bay to demonstrate that there would be a demand, and more people would buy cars if they knew there was a facility to park them in DB. And HKR would certainly make a few dollars from having a car park.

A survey would be interesting...

And then of course this would allow non-resident outsiders to drive in here as well.

Dream on Andy.

You will have a better chance with suggesting a multi-storey car park at the Zhuhai end of the that new bridge under construction. This would boost the company's toll charge income as well as providing the opportunity for  for DB bus to add an additional  external route numbered  DB0Zh. Round trip including overnight parking fees a mere $300.  The service could also bring in Mainland visitors to enjoy Funtastic Summer on the Beach
