Bicycles getting rusty in DB

Hello
I see a lot of bicycles getting totally rusty down almost every building, and I'd like to do something about that.
What I understand is that people buy bicycles  for the whole family on there first year and then don't use it anymore
Then salty and wet winds from the sea accelerate their decay and the bicycles get totally unusable very quickly. And when you want to use it again ; either you send them to repair or just buy another one ... which is really a waste of money on top of opportunity

What can we do about this ?

Personally I thought that encouraging the use of bicycles so hat they get taken care of more

Any thought ?

Hi
After some thinking I found that a simple idea is to have the bikes used more.
Since we can't ask everyone to use their i Ken more if they don't want, i propose to do BICYCLE SHARING :  and I made a Facebook page for this : https://www.facebook.com/groups/925989407537873/

Any feedback is welcome !

DB has a vibrant biking community: The Lantau Buffalos http://www.lantaubuffalos.org

There is a recent startup http://gobee.bike that aims to provide bicycle rentals in Hong Kong. Although in my mind it seems a nice idea if DB can invite them to set up here rather than residents wasting money on bicycles that rust away.

But the major stumbling block now is DB no longer has bicycle paths, they've all been disabled due to increased traffic flows resulting from building more villages.

Here is where I believe HKR failed to have hindsight. They seem to have mentioned a capacity for 25,000 residents when pitching their tender to the government. DB was intended to be a getaway resort, not a "town/city" development. But they can't be blamed. Nearly every place focused on business development rather than quality of life. Even to this day, there are significantly fewer bicycles being ridden anywhere. The roads are dominated by vehicles. Even China which was famed for it's army of bicycles had disappeared.

DB is no longer a place for bicycles. The roads in DB have already been transformed. I think a crucial turning point is if one day taxis gain full access to DB as half of residents are demanding, it will kill two birds with one stone (the death of DB Hire Car service + death of golf carts on the road). Faster moving traffic can't co-exist with slow ass golf carts.

Even if HKR could widen the road or to accommodate a bike path, the intersections are death zones. Plenty of accidents involving head on collisions between cyclists and hire care, private car, and this year with DBGC shuttle bus.

And I rambled again.

Thanks for your answer Garmato
the lantau buffalo club is dedicated to road cycling, and these guys wouldn't leave their bikes downstairs of buildings Wink
Down there there is no road bikes in the park places, but rather city bikes, foldables ones, children bikes, and some moutain bikes

Inviting gobee would indeed be a good idea. I actually had this idea shortly before Gobee came to town.
But I also totally agree with you that things are no done here for life quality but for business and looking good.
This on top of rough competition, "legal" issues (actually just contrarian government not wanting to displease exisitng businesses and statu quo) and pure pessimists ("there's not cycling lane", "HK is too hilly", "cycling is dangerous", etc ...) creates too many issues for Gobee to have the same success than in China.

as you know bicyles are making a huge comeback in china thanks to Mobike and Ofo (you've heard of them I  suppose : https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2017/mar/22/bike-wars-dockless-china-millions...)

As for DB I can already hear the arguments : "there must be a place to park bikes, it's illegal to park anywhere" (remember the notices on bikes if you leave yours even for 20 minutes?), etc ...

At least with personal bikes, there is no operational issue, nor competition or personal interest problems ; the bikes are already here, and only willingness is necessary to make it work. and this is a real shared economy thing !

Hello

I don't know for you but the last 2 typhoons have been quite harmful to my bike downstairs ; lost of rust appeared, time to repair a bit !

To follow-up with my page I did a chatbot for the fun : it will answer your questions on this rent/lend idea :
https://www.facebook.com/DiscoveryBayBikes/

Let me know if the bot doesn't behave  Wink
