Noisy bird...
Apr 12th, 2016 at 8:09am
Print Post
I get woken up every morning around 4:40am by the noisiest bird I've ever heard!
I live near the Plaza.
Any ornithologists out there that have heard it?
Curious to know what sort of bird it is and how to shut it up!

Record an audio...could be any bird.  Koyal are the ones that used to wake us up around the greens.

It's a koel, a kind of cuckoo, well-known as the noisiest bird in the universe.  Nothing to be done.  Stay cool  Smiley

Ear plugs availble in Watsons.

They are only around for a month or two, or at least that is my impression.

It's true they take a break after a couple of months but sometimes the hardier ones come back for a second try later in the summer.  Thoroughly used to them now after 30+ years of the racket.  I try to regard them as a herald of spring and that cheers me up.

Wonderful birds with their increasingly higher pitched call when they are looking for mates.  This is the female. The mature males are black, although when young look closer to the female colouring.

My upstairs neighbour makes a similar but even louder kind of noise overnight on Saturdays when he arrives home drunk with a tart and the whips and other heavy gear are taken out.   Shocked  (The sound of a Koel outside comes as quite a relief. Roll Eyes

We used to have someone called Trish on this forum and she kept a diary of HK/DB's 'seasons'. The first call of the Koel was one of her recorded moments!

I agree, there are moments in the year that I enjoy the changes.

-The first cool weather front of the year from the North to signal Autumn has arrived.
-The loud mooing frogs in drains that are actually tiny
-The damp warmth of spring arriving (7s weather)
-The still, intense heat where you just know in your bones that T1 signs will appear soon.
-The call of the Koel

As you can see, no particular order. But all moments of a year here in our HK.

Have I missed any?

Yes,  does anyone know whatever became of Trish?

I seem to recall she told us that a nephew of hers played the stunt-double of James Bond star , Daniel Craig , who parachuted from a helicopter together with "the Queen" into the stadium at the opening event of the London Olympics. Sadly he was later killed in a wingsuit flying accident. (Hope, I haven't mixed this up with somebody else who was living in DB. )

She moved back to the UK, something she thought she would never do but the pollution was affecting her and her husband with their advancing years.

They had that Roof top unit on the roof of the apex of the Midvale building. Perhaps the most commanding unit from which to observe all of DB.

Actually it is a bit of a shame, because my impression is that pollution levels have improved a bit in the last two years as moer industry heads north or simply shuts down.

Still miss Trish and her koel alerts.  We used to say that we were both still breathing after 30 years of HK pollution, and for me, living through the Great Smog of London.  Sorry she was persuaded to give up and go home.

I am not convinced pollution is any better - though happy to be proved wrong - but they have started using a different formula or system for API and that seems to show more green dots than black ones.

Two more of those moments of change:

- azaleas in the mist;
- hot at night

Waking up to birds' chirping is actually so much better than waking up to cars and busy streets on HK island. Love the switch here!

We haven't heard any aircraft noise yet, the place we live in is very well insulated.
I've come across quite a few ex DB-ers since we moved, life in Tung Chung is very pleasant indeed. Once you go past Citygate, it's a very different world.
There are quite some misconceptions in DB about Tung Chung. When we were flat hunting I was pleasantly surprised.

Just as well Lace isn't mean-spirited enough to wish you well as you battle your way through the unfolded pushchairs on the bus, SNTPC.

Good luck in TC, Lace.  I've thought of moving there too but haven't been brave enough yet.

Thanks Ger, have a look around. We moved to Coastal Skyline.
If anything, it is quieter there than our old place in DB. We lived in the Beach Village, and over the years the road noise has become horrendous.

Lace, thinking of moving to Tung Chung and what you wrote seems encouraging.

Reasons why thinking of leaving DB:

1. Getting more crowded. Buses are nearly always full during peak hours. Weekends, even our internal buses can be so full that we had to take the next bus.

2. Everything here is expensive. I bought some salmon from Fusion and Wellcome. For the same amount of money used, the salmon sold in TC was almost doubled and sometimes tripled.

3. Especially in the North and soon in Nim Shue Wan areas the buildings are built so very close.

4. DB Club house are a real joke when one compares to other development especially when you factor in the membership fees.

5. Too much to write.

DB used to be such a nice place. I guess we must move with the times.

I was comparing some places in TC to those in DB some time ago, seems like TC is slightly cheaper for approximately the same size. However that being said, I really don't know how I can convince myself walking through the often crowded CityGate, with mainly branded outlets. I much prefer a mall like that in Olympic City. Then again, living beside a mall, I am not too sure. Hard to walk my dog too. What are some convincing points may I ask? Because TC could be one of our options in the future too! Smiley

I was also looking at South Lantau but its so remote, and the drive over the mountain make me puke every single time. I heard internet there sucks! And I was checking out Sai Kung. Lots and lots of burglary stories and read SK police is very incompetent. They have advised residents to lock windows when they SLEEP! Sai Kung, again, is far out from anywhere else.  Huh

BH, feel free to pm me with any questions you might have.
I used to love living in DB, and we have lived there for many years, but we had similar grievances like the ones you listed. Here is what we live with now.

1. I walk to the MTR, there are buses as well that will bring you to most parts of Hong Kong.
2. There are 4 supermarkets (Wellcome near the wetmarket, Taste in Citygate, Marketplace by Jason next to Coastal Skyline and Fusion in Caribbean Coast), two Indian grocery stores and a wetmarket within walking distance.
3. Buildings are built fairly close, but no worse than the Greens, however, there is no road noise, much better security and the common areas are quieter.
4. The clubhouse is across the road, has indoor and outdoor pools, a bowling alley, gym, tennis courts, badminton room, reading rooms, function rooms - all without membership fees at a reasonable pay as you go rate.
Dotted around the residential areas are a number of decent privately owned restaurants (no chains) that deliver as well.
The rents here are a lot cheaper than in DB.

Rather less thanks for the oh so helpful and constructive reply copied above. I can only assume that you think DB is 100% perfect? Just because I don't like being woken at 4:30am doesn't mean I want to leave DB after 8 years. And if I do, I can make that decision on my own.

Yes. I have heard it before but it just seems louder this year and to have gone on for longer. Maybe its nest to closer this year?

Your original comment makes you sound like one of those idiots who move to an English country village, from the city, and complain about church bells and cockerels crowing.

To be honest, you haven't redeemed yourself with your response.

Why would you want to shut it up? If you don't like it then go and live in mid levels.

I used to live in the mid-levels, and you get koels there too!

At 4.30am, where I live, koels calling are less evident than crickets, hungry baby birds twittering and the general hum rising from the thicket below, mixed with the gentle lapping of waves. Great time to open the windows before DB wakes up, catching the first glows of dawn. My part of DB is still relatively unspoilt and transportion is okay. If they begin major construction affecting my immediate enclave, I will consider moving.

Tung Chung sounds liveable but the tower blocks are too high along Caribbean Coast. I might check out some village housing near YMCA or beyond, less convenient but more in keeping with a country village lifestyle.

I've thought of moving there.  TC is better for transport.  Straight on the MTR and there are all those A and E buses heading in all directions.  Later - hope much later - plans for expansion and reclamation may turn it into a mess but for the moment it's still okay.  Has a Super Super, too, but not sure about koels.
