Ferry terminal at DB North?
Jul 16th, 2010, 5:24pm

Hi all,
I think I saw it mentioned on here or wikipedia but is there a second DB ferry terminal being planned - for DB North? Is it already being constructed?
Thanks!

A ferry terminal is in planning. The temporary one now in place can not handle a lot of traffic. It was mentioned in a meeting that two boats would serve the pier: two single hulls 21 and 22. No double hulls would be used. When it will open is unannounced. Probably 2011.

They have had the ferry pier (it is a floating one) and building, near to Siena club for as long as I have lived her (3yrs,), there is a covered walkway from the new hotel, and they have put scaffolding around them and seem to be renovating. Sometimes the ferry 'parks' there already, maybe they are intending trips to Disney for Hotel guests?

Pleasure cruises, shuttle to disney (if they get permission from disney), shuttle to south plaza.
Bounty packages for the hotel, etc etc.

Mostly using that floating greenhouse that they have...

I really really cannot see a regular service to town as it would compete with their own ferries. Madness.

In the future I think there will be a regular ferry service from the new North Plaza. And perhaps we'll see some TST services thrown in aswell.

In addition to the current construction HKR plan to build more units (the area in front of the mountain where the new tunnel is) these units will be high end stuff in the same league as Chianti.

In order to market them they must improve the connectivity of DB. They have already succeeded with the taxi's and given the size and number of shops earmarked for the N plaza the plan is to attract more residents to DB.

Yes, indeed, along with complimentary champagne and gourmet meals, seat-back entertainment, hot stewardesses, back massages, manicures, etc...  Wink

The brochures are bogus, in my opinion. Chianti is hardly "high end". This is the kind of false advertising the government's now trying to outlaw.  Angry

Ferry service from the North Commercial Plaza will not happen until the Hotel is OPEN, and the Ferry Pier is enlarged to accomidate the larger boats. Don't expect any thing new until the end of 2011.

Gwaijai, don't think the Government can outlaw these kind of false advertising at all....Thousands of people in the Development Industrie would be jobless right away Wink And half the Government would be without extra income Cheesy
Think the only way to control that is not to buy/rent for the silly asking prices.
Still remember first asking prices at Chianti.... far lower right now! why???

Yeah, I hear ya, Moonie. Real estate is one of HK's sleaziest industries. Underhand deals done all over the place.

But the gov't did table a bill in Legco not long ago to curb the false advertising. Whether or not it's effective is another thing!!  Tongue

The current fleet of ferries are either old and slow or just too big.  The unforeseen consequence of the tunnel opening was the incorrect decisions on buying very large catamarans as ferry passenger numbers keep falling and the big Cats are too expensive to run.  As Db's population shifts to being centred around commuting to work in both Kowloon and the Island then ferry passenger numbers may drop even further resulting in even less frequent services.

If HKR rationalized the fleet they could operate fewer but faster, smaller cheaper ferries.  I really don't care about the champagne but a food counter would be welcome.

Sure, the ferries are getting on a bit but they remain comfortable and reliable – they're the best of any other ferry service in HK. They are also fast. However, there are speed limits in HK waters dictated by the size and service of a vessel and the route it takes – i.e. Macau jetfoils have right of way and thus can run at higher speed.

It's the same for DB ferries, Park Island ferries, etc, which are given right of way and speed over smaller craft (hence the flashing amber light on the roof).

That's why the DB cats and the monohulls have the same travel time – they adhere to the speed limit. The big cats are capable of higher speeds but are restricted.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I agree with you in wanting a better service, but the reality of it is (apart from the speed restrictions) any upgrades, whether they're new boats, more routes or enhanced frequencies, will only give more fuel to BD Transport to go to the government demanding substantial fare hikes, and I don't think that's in the interest of any of us. So my take is, appreciate the service we have now. I agree it ain't great, but it's pretty damn good, considering...

Totally agree. We could be riding the Mui Wo ferry or the Star Ferry that is open air.  Our ferries are reliable and clean. Apart from the occasional annoying school child - there is not much to complain about.  Let's focus on the CRAP bus service in DB - THAT is an area of improvement for sure!

I agree with gwaijai11 that the service is pretty darned good as it is on the ferries.

The buses, however, are another matter.  I almost missed my ferry this morning because two families with babies in strollers and luggage (headed for the airport) took ages to get on the bus, even with the driver's help.

The annoying part is that my bus actually stands waiting at the first village bus stop for almost 10 minutes before beginning the journey to the ferry - I think Pacific Coffee should petition them to get all the buses to the pier 10 mins before the ferry leaves and many more of us would line up to get a coffee to take on board.  I know I would!

The service levels are good generally but the ferry service still appears expensive and uncrowded compared to other transport services in HK.  If the ridership falls further then so will the frequency of service as the cats are just too big.

If HKR can get the Ordinance changed to allow tourist buses into DB, the whole character of DB will change and for taxis will be decided by the Transport Commission. HKR would like to convey the idea to Government that the majority of owners/residents are right behind these plans.

My nightmare is that there will be traffic coming by sea and road - as many people as possible 365 days a year - it will be like the existing Plaza on event days all the time

Eventually this will affect property prices at the North End - it will probably increase prices at the peaceful end - Peninsula but difficult to know for the North End - if the prices go up I think the demographic will   change,  but there will be no "village lifestyle".

By the way, I also think the much praised, unique DB lifestyle,  is in fact just as much an asset to Hong Kong as the HK skyline and the Star Ferry and the Convention Centre . There are people who would not stay long if it were to be in Mid-Levels or the Peak

I know that many are having second thoughts about taking the coffee voucher and voting in favour of taxis in the HKR survey ( especially Hillgrove Village which unbelievably approved at the COC, I understand).

You should know that the "real owners" on the COC have a much better proposal to help the infirm and handicapped through the tunnel  to link up with taxis and picking up anywhere in DB. The taxi solution was always useless for my end.

All is by no means lost.

You absolutely must try and get hold of AMY YUNG's questionnaire and return it.  She his fighting very hard and has good arguments against changing the Ordinance.  Let the HKR arguments stand on their own merit, but not try to tell Government that the residents want what HKR want. We are stakeholders too - and our potentially massive head count is very effective in the political arena.

Many said we would lose  the night ferry.

We would have, had it not been for reaction from owners and resident
