Can't someone get rid of "dead" bikes?
Feb 11th, 2010, 12:57pm

Around every estate or village in DB there are hundreds or even thousands of bikes parked. Careful scrutiny of them indicates that many have not been used for months or even years. Rust is taking over the previous more attractive colouring of many.
Why can't someone get rid of this unsightly pile of dead bikes?
It is quite obvious that many of the owners of these bilkes no longer wish to use them, but leaving them cluttering up the building surrounds is not good.
DBR Management leave notices to say that they can remove bikes on giving prior notice. Maybe it is time they did this.
I guess that if someone ran a business refurbishing bikes, and selling them on to other parts of the world, they couldn't find a better place to start than right here in DB.

our village management puts notices on our bikes every now and then then get somebody to come remove the ones which are not claimed.
I agree there are far too many which look like they are never used just stored there.

From recent posts, it seems people with boltcutters prefer the newer models Wink

I counted 120 good condition bikes at Blossom and Cherish Court. Most seem to have been there more than a few years. If bikes cost $1000 average, then the residents have thrown away $120000. Also there were 12 electric-motor bikes. Don't know the value, but guess they might cost $2000 new. A lot of waste by people.   Smiley

70 Abandoned bikes have been marked for removal March 15 by security at Blossom and Cherish Courts. That will remove about half of the unused bikes.

How do the security guards select which bikes are to be removed? Why not mark all bikes, and then see if their owners "get on their bike" to do something about it?

Not positive security guards do the marking, maybe City Management? But the notices were applied 30 days earlier. I think that is enough warning for owners, most of whom I believe are long moved from DB.  Smiley Smiley

what's a $1000 bike for the "petit-bourgeois" HK citizen when taitai changes LV bag every season and sonny needs the new XBOXPlaystationIPOD every 3month?
Just throw it in Nim Shui Wan or anywhere in the nature...just like with the puppies, cute for 3 months...after that, kwikkkk, dead and buried

I was glad to see the long-awaited cull of dead bikes has begun.
It might be nice if HKR City Management were to tell us where they go, and for those that want them, if they can buy one.
Does anyone know the answer to this?

Old bikes removed from Cherish and Blossom Court this morning. About 100 old bikes and kiddie bikes were hauled away as planned. Security guard said they will mark old bikes every 6 months, and haul them off.  Smiley

The management should haul them away and after three months the owner do not claim them, the management can auction them off during one of those fleas market..

a typical example of a free resource being wasted and abused.

There should be a $50/bike annual charge to get a decent location in an uncluttered, CCTV monitored bike rack.

if there was a premium service for $XX / YYY  then people could have a choice of an abused (and therefore terrible) service or paying for a good service.

I think well organized, secure bike parking is one of the basic services we already pay for in our mgt fees. I don't have a dog that needs a toilet, I don't give a fig about hanging baskets of flowers and I don't have kids that use playgrounds but I'm relaxed about the fact that my mgt fee pays part of those costs.

Give bikers somewhere to park their bikes safely where they don't cause an obstruction or eyesore. And get CM to manage it.

With so many "dead" bikes still left lying around the various blocks, wouldn't it be a good idea if HKR/City Management were to remove some more of them and put them up for sale at some very low cost at the next Flea Market?
I can think of a few people who want to own or buy a bike, but don't want the "brand new costs" involved.
As another idea, wouldn't it be good if HKR/City Management were to adopt the Paris scheme of bike rental, where 100s of bikes are available for anyone, provided they are returned to designated locations. Even if there were to be a nominal fee of say $50 per year, this would be an attractive option for DB.
