We walked round to where the new shop will be, and it already has the big Welcome sign outside, and I see the new Hotel will be a Marriot.

That might be why there was a stall at the weekend in the plaza promoting the 'Marriot'.

Lets hope the new Welcome ends the long lines at PnS, ends all the whining, and thus improves the shopping experience for us living in the south end of DB. As for Welcome, I have shopped with them for several years and my only complaint was how unfriendly the cashiers were. Welcome stocks a large quantity of Western foods. And about the same as PnS, is inconsistent: sometimes they have what you want, and sometime not. Their addition, plus the new hotel will make DB a better place for everyone.

Ben & Jerry's Pier 3 Launch -- today!

Hi Ragu,

Thanks for spreading the good moos! What you herd is right - Ben & Jerry's is opening its newest scoop shop at Central Pier No. 3 today, and to celebrate we're giving away free scoops of ice cream from 4-8pm.  Cheesy Grin

Come down with your friends, and be sure to say hi!

Many thanks,

I agree, tbrcgrad, it will be nice to have some options available instead of just the one plaza area.

Hopefully the competition will be good for both companies and we will all benefit, north and south.

As for the Ben & Jerry's....bring it on today, just don't run out of stock before I get the ferry home, please Smiley

In part...
The Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel is racing towards a December 15 opening, while a still-unnamed property in the Discovery Bay residential community will be ready for business in 2010.

Twenty minutes from the airport, a still-unnamed, 300-room hotel is under construction in Discovery Bay – an project by HKR International, the same owner and operator of Bangkok’s Sukhothai and The Sentosa in Singapore.

Its location in a residential community provides guests with facilities outside the property, such as a large al fresco dining scene, a 27-hole golf course and meeting and teambuilding facilities at Discovery Bay’s new draw The Bounty, a European tall ship.

HKR’s senior manager for marketing, Ms Polly Kong, said: “With comprehensive MICE facilities within and around the hotel, our major target market would be the MICE segment as well as local companies looking for off-site venues.

“On the other hand, the serene resort setting of the hotel would also appeal to the leisure segment looking for a different experience in Hong Kong.” – Sharon Desker Shaw

I assumed the new hotel would be Marriot, because they had sponsered stall in Plaza at the weekend, however maybe it could be like the Sentosa, or Sukhothai, both of which are also beautiful high class hotels, no matter what, I am sure it will be a very welcome addition to DB, and help our restaurants and shops.

Um, that link is a year old. From Nov '08. The Mariott Sky City already opened in December LAST YEAR.

Maybe the new DB hotel will be a Marriott given that they were down at the plaza last weekend and ChillyPepper said they went for a walk around the area. But currently I can not find anything on the web or on google that actually confirms this.

I am almost certain it will be a Marriott Hotel. They were probably waiting to clear up the transport problem. Now that taxi and coaches will be allowed in DB, and their participation in the Christmas Market, I would expect an official announcement soon.

The fountain in the roundabout near the tunnel has been turned on and there were lots of gardeners there over the weekend planting lots of red and pink flowers.

Is this preparation for the opening of the north plaza? Is the supermarket opening this Friday 18th?

There has been no official announcement about the Wellcome opening this month. Seems strange, and even DB has not promoted it. Maybe is was a false rumor? Does anyone live near that part of DB who could find out?

We walked our dog round the new plaza yesterday, the Wellcome store is there with its name painted on the outside, but the windows are still boarded up, and the pedestrian area around it is not finished properly yet. I cannot see it opening this side of Christmas as originally planned (Iheard a while ago 18or19th as target date) , because the areas around it are still too unsafe for mothers with small children. The middle of last week I saw wast bins being delivered and put in place around the outside of the store, however unless the Christmas fairies pull out a trick or two, I think it will not be ready on time. As I previously have said we were told in a meeting with Welcome that they planned on opening 18th Dec but this could have been delayed of course by the not completed work.

Am sure we will be told when it is open!!!

OK, for all you rumor mills and people who are in the KNOW:

This just in from Wellcome:

Thank you for your email.

Due to the site construction is still on process, there would not be any
opening of Wellcome store in Discovery Bay this year.

Best regards,

Yours sincerely,

Here's hoping, Trish.  There are some days in there that it's impossible to get up and down the aisles and what really irks me is the number of people who stop to chat, with their trolleys, and block the passageways.

Most times now, I try to manage with a handbasket !!

After the Wellcome opens, I suggest that Fusion take over the old Flying Pan location and make it a Wine and Beer sales. Then, the old wine an beer shop in the store can be expanded into more products.

With 7-11's share of take-out beverage sales for consumption in the plaza, I wonder if they might try and circumvent such a move.

Interesting dynamics at work here.

Focus on North Plaza: will HSBC install ATMs in the plaza? That would surely help us living on the South side, and do more to separate the two DB communities.   Smiley

I walked over yesterday and visited the new plaza, still a bit of a construction site. But the Wellcome store is coming on nicely, there were staff inside the shelves not all but some were stacked. It seemed like a big supermaket with wide corridors/lanes.

I'd give it another month or so.

Yes I have looked at the construction site today, they are putting up boards round the centre piece clock, and unfinished fountain near Wellcome, the paving is very nearly finished in the Plaza, I'm thinking maybe the boards are going up to make the site safer so maybe the store will open?

Heard from a reliable source today that the Wellcome is hoping to open on March 15th...so realistically we can cross our fingers and add a month onto that..prob. a safe bet.

raba0910,

Someone else has heard, also from a "reliable source" that Welcome is pulling out. Take a look at this thread from DB Pub:

http://www.discoverybayforum.com/cgi-bin/yabb231/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1265006545

I wonder whose reliable source is more reliable?

I never understood people that take time out of their day to come online to a conversation forum and then lambast people for not getting out more when discussing the very thing that this part of the website exists for.
I now understand that its called being a Troll.
A bit like going onto a Porsche owners forum discussing tech matters and calling them all boring. It serves no purpose but to flamebait.

Back to the topic and ignoring the flamebait...

I personally am looking forward to having another choice here in DB that is alot closer for me.
I would imagine that it will have a very noticable effect on the numbers in Fusion Trish, so it is probably good for us all.

More buses too, it seems.
Convience grows, but I suppose so does the traffic...
